I had high hopes for this movie and even rushed out to see it.
I adore Sophia Coppola's work and I enjoyed it for the visuals/cinematography, and the fantastic soundtrack -- opening up with The Ramones version of "Baby I Love You" was genius, adding modern flair to the film.
However, the story itself was flat. It was enjoyable, but that's as far as it goes.
A better version of this story was "Elvis & Me" that was on television in the late 1980s. It had more pack for the punch, more detailed, and Dale Midkiff and Susan Walters made a better Elvis & Priscilla (in my humble opinion, but I'm not an Elvis expect.).
Both movies pulled from Priscilla Presley's book "Elvis & Me" but the original movie did a better job as it took you along on the journey.
If you watch both back to back, you can see some of the same lines, which is cool. And the original version will fill in missed details for those who didn't read the book.
What confuses me about Priscilla Presley though, she's been with Elvis such a short time and there must be so much more to her life. I'd love to see a movie on Priscilla AFTER Elvis. Something with a little more empowerment. (This is what I thought the movie would be, coming from the fact that it's a Sophia Coppola production). I'd like to know more about Priscilla's career, her involvement with Graceland, her other relationships, what it's like to lose a child. Her Elvis story was so very long ago and just a brief time in her life.
Yes, he had a temper. Yes, he cheated on her. Not the best husband material, but she could have left him and gone back to her family.
Yes, Elvis was a great talent and handsome and generous, but he had issues that weren't going to be worked out because he was surrounded by "yes men." Sadly, no one would stand up to Elvis.
Today Priscilla Presley is still cashing in on his name--and still using his last name!! C'mon, Priscilla, can you not do better than this?
Linda Thompson moved on.
Ginger Alden moved on.
It's time for Priscilla to move on as well.
