After over 60+ hours already put into the game, I finally started to watch other people play and I saw a lot of criticism and underwhelming reactions. It quite honestly shocked me. Many people saying this is a “Far Cry copy and paste” or “Well it’s Ubisoft” and things of that nature, I had an entirely different experience.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was a breath of fresh air for me. One of the most beautiful worlds (visually and graphics wise) I’ve ever played, a nice long story driven campaign, a satisfying progression system, and just an overall peaceful feel good, feel calm game. I also personally ran into barely any bugs or issues and was able to have my still game look amazing on lower graphics or run smoothly on higher too. Many people claim Ubisoft has a crazy amount of bugs and issues on launch and I haven’t experienced that much and have to say it feels like every big game company has that issue around launch so it’s really impressive that this game feels as polished as I think it is.
As far as the story goes, it was very captivating and exciting. I felt like I was Jake Sully as the main character in Avatar 3. The villain was well played, the allies and other characters all felt good with a tiny amount of some forced feeling characters in there but nothing every other big company in every industry hasn’t done or tried already.
I play dozens of genres of games and have clocked in hundreds of hours on tons of them games. From endless indies games, to horror games, to grinding camos on Call of Duty, racing cars in Forza, playing FIFA, to buying 300 cars in GTA 5. I’m not trying to say I’m an experienced gamer or anything because we all are, but I just couldn’t believe how negative the reviews have been and how much people are so quick to judge and write a game off. I’m not sure if people these days have a short attention span or what but if you’re already thinking about skipping the first cutscene, it’s not the game, it’s probably just you.
This game is for the long journey type gamers. Gamers like me who know they have a ginormous stunning open world with dozens and dozens of side quests and a very story driven campaign, who loves leveling up their characters and taking down enemy bases and clearing the map of bad guys. If you’re anything close to what I just described, I literally guarantee you will deep dive into this game to the point of sleep deprivation.
Ubisoft, credit is due where it is deserved and I think everyone who worked on this game did an incredible job. From the world, to the detail, and to the culture of the Na’vi, making them truly come alive. I know it sounds corny and like I’m some fanboy (AND I DON’T THINK UBISOFT IS PERFECT) but when Ubisoft releases a game I think I might be into, they always deliver.
Looking forward to Skull and Bones.
