I was one of the people who saw continuity issues, and yes, some corny designs on space ships, architecture and costumes on the first go round. But on the second, third and so on viewings it not only started to make sense, but I understood the depth of the story. You have to pay attention and get deeper into the characters. That's the thing about sci-fi. You have to ignore some of the purviews of the writer. One last thing. It may help to read the book.
