Probably inspired by and thought of as a replacement for "The Twilight Zone", which had pretty much run its course by 1963, Outer Limits took visually risque special effects (for that period of time) and blended them with parables of a new technological and ethical age. The soundtrack was meant to mesmerize and chill the viewer, pretty much the same track every week. For a black & white program, The Outer Limits definitely broke some early ground, indeed it opened the floodgates for new Sci-fi franchises, on TV and film, tho it took a few years for most of them to emerge (At least one episode was blacked out in some parts of the country in the name of protecting early '60's audiences sensitive eyes and guts from the horrible monsters depicted in it -- way too scary for the kids in particular).
