I was so looking forward to Anya in something truly wonderful as Queens Gambit and Last Night in Soho started out as the perfect vehicle for her.. still in period and letting her float and dance in beautiful period dresses to the spellbinding music of the time and drop her delicious and beguiling alien eyes so filled with mystery. Matt Smith seemed perfectly slick and the chemistry was great. I was moved ...nearly but not quite to tears As the film progressed I was hoping a great story would unfold…I was good with the time travel and mystical aspects as Thomasin’s character unfolds . If the supernatural aspects of this story pushed credibility that would have been ok. Plausability and the supernatural need not be mutually independent. I actively look for supernatural stories that at the same time seem grounded in a reality that a viewer can relate to and be drawn in to ....
Then the most boring thing imaginable happens. Nothing at all.
The director could have used stock footage from any of the tedious zombie films out there. For some reason that is never explained , old grey , faceless men start to appear everywhere and she is running away from everything....destroying wonderfully sexy scenes with her new black boyfriend I was anxious to see develop. What starts out to be a challenging and touching story turns into a cheesy zombie movie for no particular reason and stupid endless chase scenes through the streets. The wonderful relationships are abandoned and the cool story collapses into a heap of chase footage...the scenes I wait for to take a bathroom break...because they are all the same. The same old same old zombie chase nonsense garbage. Zombie movies and horror suck, like kung fu movies and the people who like that kind of garbage know where to find it….NLD .. etcetera. It’s formulaic, repetitive and mindlessly sadistic all with no dramatic point. And the comparisons I see here to Hitchcock are laughable… have these people ever watched Hitchcock….the finely written scripts, the carefully structured scenes, the meticulous plot and character development.....and magically... no zombies… ever. Would it take that much to work on and develop a great story arch with characters and outcomes that the viewer can actually care about. If the genre is horror...then make it horrible...but ...please, please, please,....make it make sense! A total waist of 19.95$. I would rather pay 19.95 for a stick to hit myself in the face with than to pay for this junk. Tons and tons of potential...all of that potential wasted....flushed down the toilet. Just lazy story development. Utterly boring. I fast forwarded to the end … the end was the best part.
