Overall, it wasn’t a terrible film. Most horror movies are terrible low budget movies that rely on cheap scares to carry it to be a sequel. I enjoyed this twisted family drama for what it was. It’s not a traditional horror film, which is probably why so many people are intrigued by it. The film contains several provoking psychological elements that generally move the plot forward. Part of the problem many people had with the film was the way it was marketed before the release. Similar to the film “Hereditary”, the trailer and the hype leading up to the release of the film made it seem like another traditional scary/horror film. And the people who enjoy those specific films were, by and large, not happy with the final result and felt tricked or even bored. People like to know what they are walking into before giving up more than 2 hours of their time. And if you’re expecting to see horror, even if you generally enjoy drama films, if you’re not in the mood to watch such a film, you’re probably going to receive it negatively. As for the acting...well, I wouldn’t say the actors were amazing (execution of Lupita Nyong’o), but I also wouldn’t say it was the worst I’ve see. The daughter and son interaction with their doppelganger/clone was a bit awkward to watch. Especially with the daughter running for her live and stopping without being out of breath. The only stand-out performances I thought came from the terrific Lupita Nyong'o (also known as the award winning Patsey from the 12 Years A Slave). But I think the true star of the film is the sound and the eerie score that carries throughout the narrative, along with the confusing and creepy shock scenes that makes your skin crawl. Don’t expect too much from the script, and I’m sure many will have plenty of questions about the ending. As long as the film entertained people, that’s all that really matters in the end. I give it a C+
