This is a pretty good bad movie. There are a lot of cool elements and themes that they're trying to explore, most notably the desensitization to violence, exploitation, existentialism in horror films, and the history and impact culturally of horror films. There are some great references, tropes, and a little bit from each genre splashed in. That being said, the film is rushed, the plot twists seem more like band-aids for plot holes, and there isn't enough of a foundation of certain characters to establish there importance to the film. There's plenty of gore, sex, heroics, and some new ideas thrown in that I've yet to see in other films, but there's still a hollowness to the film that comes from trying to cram too many styles into one. Is it a teenage sex romp, a buddy comedy, a slash em up with no real ethos, or an homage? It's clear to see the effort behind all of these directions, but not clear as to what stands out the most. Too much explanation and too much self-referencing can really bog a film down and patronize the viewer. Blood Fest has the same spirit as Zombieland, but you can see why pace, direction, and the correct balance of camp are important in these types of films. Again, a pretty good bad movie, but not a great one.
