Not so much a history as a series of rabbinic quotations that allude to different periods of history which Goodman then gives the driest exegesis of. The book does little to advance knowledge of Jewish History, let alone the history of Jewish theology. Goodman's writing exemplifies why so many people can't stand history teachers: frankly, his writing is boring and he's a terrible story-teller.
