I rate this movie a solid 4.5 stars out of 5 and here is why.
This movie in my honest opinion shows a really good portrayal at human nature. For a slight spoiler, the four captors in the movie represent the horsemen of the apocalypse but not in the "Death, Famine, War, and Conquest" way. But in a "Malice, Nurturing, Guidance, and Healing" way as said near the end of the film. Sure, this is because of the material of the plot consists of supernatural occurrences but it's poetic in that it shows that these 4 different archetypes were chosen to do a heinous and out right screwed up mission.
I'd also like to add that Dave Bautista did an excellent job in this film particularly. He's more so known for Drax in Marvel and other goofy action flix but he's actively trying to expand his range and is honestly doing a damn good job at it. I can't really see another person doing Dave's acting better here besides people who are known for doing these kinds of roles.
This is also an excellent film about LGBTQ as it shows what traumatic events can happen to those in the community. It also shows how different people can process that trauma, rather that be blaming insane situations based of that trauma or not relate it to the situation at all.
I've read a decent amount of reviews here and some of the 1 star ones just don't make any sense. Such as saying that it's all about Jesus and God saving earth from some crazy end of the world mission. Or that it's not thought provoking and therefore a bad movie. None of these reviews make any sense as that's not what the movie is made for. A film doesn't need to be thought provoking to be good, if that is your standard for a good film, then you don't know film making at all. Not every story needs a insane plot twist or crazy reveal. It is a very simple film and that's all it needs to be. Making new story points to get shock value is stupid and cheap.
To see this film and only think "M. Shyamalan thought 'Repent and believe in Jesus Christ or suffer the consequences I guess idk'" is idiotic at best. There was nothing telling the characters to believe in God or Jesus or repent for sins. No one in the movie uttered any even remotely close to "you must repent to save everyone" or "believe in god/jesus and everything will be fixed". Anyone saying these things are either finding some made up excuse to hate the movie, or misunderstood the movie to an incredible degree.
Is the plot simple? Yes. Is the movie bad because the plot is simple? No. Please learn to appreciate a film for what it is and not what it isn't. Maybe you wanted it to a little differently or very differently. Good for you, but that doesn't mean you can call it bad just because it wasn't to your liking.
Want to see a movie that shows good LGBTQ representation? Watch this movie. Want to see Dave Bautista in a more serious role? Watch this movie. Want to see the main character stop the bad guys and save the day? Then watch a Marvel movie.
