A hot mess of a show. Would be three or four stars if it wasn't part of an established universe, but it is. The biggest challenge with writing in a pre-existing world is that you will find yourself limited by continuity laid down years or decades before and it takes exceptional creative abilities to harmonize your wacky ideas with their wacky ideas and most of all you have to know when it just isn't going to work and you have to let go. Discovery fails this test. Never letting the concepts or continuity of the existing series, or even itself, get in the way of a darling plot point. I would honestly love to see this writers room make an original science fiction drama. They would be great and probably much happier playing in their own world.
