I'm sure the first question everyone would like to know is can Robert Pattinson play a convincing Batman/Bruce Wayne? I can now assure you that he can and not only did he portray the character with such finesse, he did it by bringing Matt Reeve's Batman to life without breaking a sweat. It is this fan's opinion that Robert Pattinson is as good a Batman as Christian Bale, if not better. Kudos to Zoë Kravitz as well for giving us a highly commendable performance as Selina Kyle - what a really good on-screen chemistry between the two actors.
As for the story, Matt Reeves set out to craft an action-packed crime thriller that celebrates Batman as the world's greatest detective, and he did exactly that, drawing inspiration from Batman: Year One and Batman: The Long Halloween comic books. Using stylistic elements of film-noir from the 40s and 50s with a definingly modern take, the writer-director managed to essentially create a grounded comic book movie that is extremely gritty, intense and suspenseful.
Matt Reeves' Batman is a young Batman, still in the midst of discovering his purpose, as he tries his best to rid Gotham city of crime and corruption. This version of the character is a crime-solving vigilante, and not yet a superhero. With that said, this Batman movie focuses on very serious themes and while Chris Nolan's Batman films may have a few lighthearted moments, you will not experience any of that here. Good or bad? I'll let you decide after you watched it.
While I want to review this film on its own merits, it's hard not to compare it with previous Batman movies. All I'll say is if you like Chris Nolan's Batman, you'll like Matt Reeves' Batman. This is arguably the most realistic depiction of a 80-year-old fictional character we all come to love over the years.
