Disney has remade most of its animations into live movies over the years. "Mulan" is one of these works. Of course, I have to say that Mulan animation is not as nostalgic as other Disney products, but in some ways, the 1998 version was a new window into the Disney world. Before that, Disney girls were foggy, whose charm motivated the men in the story to come and save these loved ones from the clutches of demons and devils and the like. But Mulan cut his hair short and with a sword in his hand, followed the villain of the story, and of course this successful example, made us see more female action heroes in the cartoon world.
In the case of adapted works, it is difficult to examine the work in question independently. In the 2020 version, although thirty minutes have been added to the movie time, but there is no news about the songs of the original movie, which I personally have no problem with. But in the animation, there was a little old dragon named Musho with the voice of Eddie Murphy, which was very funny. Not only the mouse but also many fantasy comedy moments have been removed in the new version and the director has included feminine messages instead. Interestingly, young people who listened to Mulan 22 years ago are now frustrated with watching the film without seeing those moments. Mulan 2020 also does not have good action scenes. Perhaps if the filmmakers had watched a few Hong Kong movies, they would have designed the fight scenes with better taste.
Mulan is a Chinese legend in which a talented girl defends her country against the enemy in a patriarchal era. This story can be motivating for any female audience and praiseworthy for any male spectator. But when the director wants to use this platform only to convey his feminist messages, then we are faced with a serious and gloomy work like Mulan 2020. Finally, I still recommend the 1998 version.
