Oh man where do I begin. People who review this as a masterpiece have never seen a good psychological movie, or maybe they are simply delusional? To be honest I’m not sure.
Anyway, the movie itself is a complete disaster from start to finish. Absolutely pitiful story telling throughout the entire film. It starts with no context which isn’t completely horrible because many movies do, but then it proceeds to just tell absolutely nothing for the most part. Maybe if this movie was 12 hours long and had much more time to tell its story and describe characters it may bring itself up to a three star. The story itself could be told in many better different ways, and here’s two examples of great and heavily known psychological thrillers that tell a story 100x better than this trash.
1 American Psycho, say what you want about this movie, after the credits roll it leaves you with a feeling. It also takes you down a trip of psychopathy and many other ideological themes. It tells its story with emotion and clear, logical connections and SUBTLE details (deep water fails to have a hint of subtleness). Deep Water fails to convey anything and also tells no story, failing in comparison in EVERY aspect to american psycho.
2 Fight Club. I hate how tiktok and social media have ruined this movie that I already rate at a 3/5, but even I must say it is a good film and bounds better than Deep Water. Fight Club tells a story through so many different ways that I can’t list them all.
Main takeaway: Deep Water is a psychological film that tells no story and explains nothing, automatically making it worse in comparison.
Another thing that should rub everyone the wrong way is that if both of these people have mental conditions that make them lack moral feeling than why are they with each other??? She feels no remorse for the husband but she for some reason dosent divorce him because she had a daughter?? IRL she wouldn’t care for her child just like she doesn’t care for her husband. The husband that feels no remorse for any of his victims would not feel “love” for his wife. I could go on and on about how the mental conditions they share don’t act the way the directors want them too but i’ll move forward instead.
To sum it up, Ben Afleck does an absolutely amazing job acting but even in his act you can tell that he is acting a shallow character in a shallow story. This movie is horrible and if you disagree than call me so I can prove you wrong.
