TLDR: Awesome game, please play it to support the creativity mixed with the best video game format. I’m looking forward to what the devs do next.
Okay so I was super excited when I heard about this game from IronPineapple on YouTube (if you don’t know him check out his steam dumpster diving series, it’s great). Soulslikes are my favorite genre and this seemed like an interesting take on that format. The characters have a kind of childlike sense about them but I actually grew to appreciate it as many video games take themselves too seriously and it ends up feeling corny. The story is simple at first and grows into a full well rounded tale and the environment is amazing. The devs took a depressing fact about undersea life and managed to spin an awesome game out of it. Kudos to the creative team for coming up with iconic bosses and world design. The combat is fun and the different abilities keep it fresh. This may look like a kids game but it’s got some real challenges in the boss fights that are balanced well with exploration and platforming. The thought I kept coming back to is this feels like the old school days of gaming on GameCube, a fun original story that presents entertaining challenges. If you like souls and want something out of the box, please give this game a chance. I sincerely hope the devs get the attention they deserve so we can get future installments from them that are this much fun. I have 100 hours in the game and it never got stale. Go download it.
Cons- I played on Xbox one and there was occasional lag and stuttering and I could tell the graphics were dumbed down. From what I see from other reviews this seems like a back end optimization issue as it happens on the series x as well.
I do wish they would add more melee weapons outside of the fork as the magic attacks are the only way to switch it up in combat. Don’t get me wrong it works well as is, I just would like to see more variety on the melee side.
