Jennifer Aniston's character is brilliant, and so is her acting. The characterisation in general in the series is good. One of the other positives of the series is its ability to keep you engaged. Even the instances, where the show is tilting towards becoming super problematic, you don't feel like turning it off. Some sub narratives are obscurely sketched. I felt, especially in the first few episodes that the narrative was trying too hard to justify itself. There seems to be a conscious effort in trying to understand the complexities of the 'me too' movement. But, the effort comes out as cryptic. It almost makes me think whether the show is trying to invalidate the movement. But as the show progresses, one realises that it supports it, and is questioning the culture of silence around harassment (the ending however, is highly unflattering and formulaic). The narrative gets too cluttered while exploring complexities.
I thought that the best thing about the show was Jennifer Aniston's character, Alex. Her acting prowess added more strength to the character she was essaying. You feel her vulnerability at all times. There's no scene, where you don't empathise with the woman, even though she's being patronising, manipulative, and obstinate. She's in a position of power, and yet so powerless. She's constantly striding and conniving to retain herself in that corporation. Every other character too, is hungry for power, but I felt the most for Alex. Alex's family's broken, and her daughter disapproves of her relentless working hours. Her wily behaviour to save her position comes out of her desperate need not just for money but for having a purpose to continue to live life. I empathised with her even when she wanted to throw Bradley into infamy and ruins (the worst you can do for someone's career).
I agreed with most of her scenes, except the one with her confrontation with her daughter. Even though her confession about why she didn't love her husband, made me cry, the scene's presence in that show is questionable. I didn't feel uncomfortable while the scene was playing out, because I was hoping that Alex would redeem for her problematic statements to her daughter towards the end, but that redemption didn't happen!
P.S.- I want to give it 2.5 stars but that's not an option available!
