I love history, westerns and have a soft spot for Kevin Costner, both Dances With Wolves and Open Range rank near the top of the list for me. With that said, I was really excited about this new western”epic”. However, upon reading both professional and amateur reviews of this film my enthusiasm wained. Despite some unfavorable reviews I decided to give it a watch due to my enjoyment of both Costner’s past films and the genre. The cinematography, soundtrack, costuming and acting was all great! I am not sure that there can be much debate about that. The film show the history of the west, the struggle against the Mother Nature, the diversity of the west, the reasons for Manifest Destiny, the violence in the conquest of and defense of the west, It seemed people had complaints about the multiple story lines going occurring at once and the slow character development. Is it fast paced and full of action? No. Are there multiple story lines throughout the western frontier? Yes. I feel those complaints are from people who need a fast paced action pack film and are unappreciative of the scale of this film. I am excited for the next installment of this saga, I am glad I didn’t let the naysayers prevent me from seeing this film!
