I can't believe the high ratings people have given this film. Several articles also mention it as a great film.
Despite being a horror fan, I did not see this movie until 2024, 15 years after its release. After reading some articles which mentioned it as a great film and seeing the high RT rating, I thought perhaps it just had bad advertising which drove me away from it. Actually, if it were the stupid cliche horror movie I recall the advertising making it look like, it would have been better.
The lead characters are thoroughly unlikable. The scary elements are few, with most ruined by silly special effects, while the humorous elements are also too few, while rather amusing. Perhaps leaning more fully into one of the genres would have helped. Evil Dead, for example, manages to be both much scarier AND much funnier, I think leaning more heartily into the horror and allowing the humor to be outrageous when appropriate.
There are random bits of story thrown in which don't really make sense, like the too minimal backstory at the beginning with minimal tie-in near the end, and some awkward attempt to make it seem like she's embarrassed to be from the country.
The soundtrack was pretty good.
Overall, not worth the time I took to watch it.
