This movie is a secret masterpiece. At first watch, I thought 4/10. However, after studying the film and analysing it it comes close to 9/10.
Along with a great cast comes a great story.
Story:
The movie takes a different approach, this is not a biopic. This a fictional story of a famous person in history (Think inglorious badgered, once upon a time in Hollywood).
Andrew has done this before on his other movies. This story shows us all the rumours, all the theories and speculations that were based around Marilyn. He also shows her true side but is overshadowed by how the public viewed her. All the stories can’t be confirmed. They are fiction. People may say it doesn’t represent real Marilyn and give negative reviews, but that’s exactly what the director was going for. He wanted to show exactly what her portrayal is, and how wrong it is. He showed her as the Marilyn the public made her out to be. Even the ridiculous rumours.
If you’re having difficulties watching it, good. It is meant to be hard to watch, to understand slightly, how difficult it was to live in that life.
Andrew shows also how these rumours grew and evolved into bigger rumours with no base for facts with a clever scene of paparazzis photographing Marilyn, and with every frame there was more and more and more paparazzis. Presumably, illustrating the exaggeration from retelling of the story.
The movie shows a sad legacy of a great actress that was human, but wasn’t treated as one.
The movie is very layered and the meaning can be easily missed.
Style:
The cinematography and dialogue was heavily influenced by movies from the era the film is set in. It feels out of place at times and it’s an area I saw many criticisms in other reviews. Hardcore cinema fans might see this but general public looking for an evening flick may easily miss this.
Famous photographs recreated by letting a scene play out was a great addition to the movie that were very aesthetic and recognisable.
Conclusion:
In my opinion, this movie is very misunderstood and the artistic message can be easily missed. It is a movie that will introduce people to Marilyn and sum up all the things they might hear or read about her, all based on rumours that cannot be verified. It is meant to peak interest into the mysterious life of a great actress and show the dirty secrets of Hollywood.
