Underneath the comedy and hint of horror is a heartfelt exploration of the harmful effect that greed has on art. In this brilliant film, art is elevated to the level of spiritual experience and the exploitation of it for financial gain is raised to the level of sin. I love the perspective and I think it's very thoughtful.
Jake G's character, though he is pretentious on the surface, is really an idealist who believes in the beauty and transcendent power of art. His good reviews cannot be bought so in a way he has not allowed greed to outweigh art. But the other characters (except for the two actual painters) couldn't care less about art and are in it for the money. The exploitation of art for the sake of greed is the vice that is punished throughout the film. The tortured soul of an artist literally murders the people that would take his works, which he'd literally put his blood, sweat, and tears into, and exploit them for money.
I thought it was funny. It was scary at times too. But most of all I think there is something TRUE in this film that every artist needs to consider. For this reason I give it a 5/5.
