I've not read the books but I have read the last kingdom series. I usually love all these types of shows - last kingdom, vikings, GOT, lord of the rings - but this one is a bust. No action. Anachronistic dialogue. Why are they dying and processing wool while everyone is clearly wearing anything but wool? Ok. That's picky. But really when I found myself on-line shopping instead of watching. I quit the thing.

After waiting months to get this from the library, I was so excited to read it. Sadly, was unable to finish it. There are so many unexplained words and cultural references that I couldn't make sense of the story. My constant googling for the meanings of things made me forget what I was reading. It was a slog. I think the historical subject is fascinating but I could not connect to it with this telling.
