By far the most disappointing of the Monsterverse. Maybe geared towards the general public, but not for fans of the franchise.
I've watch all the movies of the Monsterverse at least twice, but this is probably the only one I will watch only once.
Why? That's exactly it. This movie makes me question why on almost everything without delivering driving answers.
Visuals are great, I give credit for that. But almost all the previous elements of the Monsterverse that makes it so special is absent in this movie. I'll keep my list short:
1. Monsters: We have two legendary giant kaiju icons fighting each other, great if you like fights that are meaningless. The feeling and prospective of these creatures being "gigantic" is reduced or lost. Godzilla's drive and character is underwhelming, and we don't know why. Kong's history should have been explored in depth, but was glanced over in this movie. Both of these mega monster icons deserves better.
2. Humans: they were just there. Played almost no significant role. Besides Jia, everyone's interactions were bland and not compelling. It's "Hello, Okay, Good Bye" throughout the whole movie. Apex is doing its own thing and we don't why as the audience. Why, apex, why? Why are there no other monarch agents around besides Mark, who doesn't even have a role in the movie besides being the head? Team Kong never even make contact with Team Godzilla.
3. No complexity in the plot while making so many holes (not plot holes). Again, why? Why things happen at Skull island? Why Ren is doing what he does? Why monarch is not heavily involve in all this? Why MG went on a rampage? And why Godzilla blasted a hole all way down? Too many holes that does not contribute to the plot whatsoever.
4. Sequel setup: Where's the setup? Movie gave nothing to possibly hint a continuation. Looks like a happy peaceful end to me. Possible existence of other Space monsters - nope, forget about that. New or returning monsters - nope, disappeared. Consequences of Godzilla's destruction and his fight with Kong and MG - the world will never know.
Despite that the goal of the movie is not wanting to be a Batman vs Superman movie, it kind of became one but worse with lazy writing and poor motivation. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Toho pulls the plugs on WB and Legendary, besides pumping Godzilla's powers and making MG awesome (few saving graces in movie) they butchered everything else.
It's not a horrible movie. Standalone, it's okay - but not in connection with the Monsterverse. It's not totally bad, but it's very disappointing when we had this delayed for so long. Honestly, would have preferred to wait longer if I knew that this was the final product. A movie for the general, but undeserving for real G-Fans.
This is the summarized version of my movie critique without spoiling much. Gladly explain to anyone why it's disappointing, but it will a long discussion.
