This movie had so many random things in it that it was hard to keep up . Our main characters are Hawaiian and when asked why they speak Spanish ? “I learned Spanish because everybody thought I was Puerto Rican in New York”. So our characters just learned Spanish from some stereotypical racism ? Cool I guess .. then they go to Hawaii after showing us them living in NYC for all of 1 minute . Next we see a more stereotypical view of Hawaii which isn’t uncommon in Hollywood I expected that but it got to be too much with the grandfather’s pidgin English and the kapu legend making utterly no sense . Kapu aren’t the equivalent of Angels in Christianity , their fathers soul could not be a Kapu and if it was then he wouldn’t have be so nice to them . The tasteless racist jokes sprinkled in the script along with casting every Chinese actor they could find in there didn’t add much to the story line. This movie was a love letter to Keanu Reeves with racist jokes every 5 minutes . Wouldn’t watch again. By the way naming the only white character you have “Casper”? Really ? What a waste of film .

I felt confused by this film. I couldn’t tell if it was serious or just jokes . I understand the theme was suppose to be serious but the inappropriate times for jokes seemed insensitive and misleading . Some of the questions she asked during her interviews felt insensitive . Example : during the interview of “bloody Lourdes” she asks the clearly pained woman what it felt like to have someone die in your place . That question isn’t related to the topic and just causes internal suffering to the woman . Another “ joke” I felt was in poor taste was the segment of October fest . No, I don’t care what she asked the white people it was assuming going in they were all racist and hinting that Germans are racist so they must be that bothered me . The war is as sensitive and painful for German immigrants most likely as this issue is for you. That war wasn’t that long ago and some of us still wear scars from it . Overall this woman gives me the impression she is trying to use her views to perform some very cringey white savior complex documentary . POC don’t need a white woman to self hate or to force other whites to hate themselves to “save” them . I watched this to hear POC views on the topic but I rarely got that . The most painful thing I realized from a POC in this documentary was that it is a privilege to know your past . I found that to be the only insightful thing the rest is just inappropriate jokes hidden in POC stories
