Classic Gold! I just finished my first full rewatch since the 80's. It hit hard, Its Of its time and not PC.... but it has heart! and the final episodes are masterclasses in Change, loss and affection.
The only issues I have with it are that two characters Just 'Vanish' with no explanation on screen. Rangi Ram played by Michael Bates died in real life but his character was the 'To camera' narrator for 5 series, and having him just vanish seems a huge disservice to the show, the actor and the audience. the other character who though a smaller role still brought a huge amount of humor and sarcasm was Rumzan the punkah Wallah who just disappears at the end of Series 6 and is replaced by an ineffectual new character.
Otherwise the show has a superb insanity tinged with melancholy. Later Perry and Croft sitcoms -'Hi-di-Hi', 'You Rang M'lord' and 'Oh Dr Beeching' built on the groundwork laid here. (Hi Di Hi Is still the saddest comedy Ive ever watched....Beautifully real and balanced.)
well done ' My Lovely Boys'
