Spoiler warning! I rather rate this a one, but there’s certain things I liked, so let’s get that out the way! The teacher was cool, I love Charlie’s sister and Bob was too real lol. And the ending was lovely and well done, very emotional.
However, as someone who is in high school and not popular, this movie made me feel really uncomfortable. The THREE seniors kiss a freshman. TWO of them sleep with him/ have sexual feelings for the freshman. It just made me feel gross, because that’s a whole adult dating a person who just came out of middle school. It’s just not really accepted now and I hate that it’s the main relationships.
This is going to sound weird, but I’m not sure how else to explain it, but the actors FELT like actors, like they’re reading a script. Not because the actors are bad, they were wonderful, but the characters don’t feel real, they don’t feel like high school teens at all. It’s a quirky, outsider, weirdo group of characters that aren’t realistic, it feels fake is what I mean.
The ending with the breakdown was wonderful and I loved the hints at what the aunt did to him. That part was wonderful and very touching because I also have a history of self harm and suicide idealization (I’m fine now, 8 months clean!) and seeing him think like that was so, nice I guess!
If you want my recommendations for actually good and realistic coming of age movies, my go to is LadyBird! Booksmart is also funny and kinda realistic, but it’s better than this movie!
All in all, I had hopes for it because of the reviews but I just felt uncomfortable, not portraying a realistic experience, and a cringey portrayal of quirky dialogue and characters. Some of it was good, but it’s really not the best or anything. <33
