Vadim Smirnov

This was an oxymoron feeling  (in early 70s) - both of excitement and horror, like the one in a zoo serpentarium. Also, it was the second encounter with Tony Musante (after his satanic role in "The Incident'') and an acquaintance  with Scott Wilson, whose rendition of an Innocent mentally deranged savage character was beyond compare. The film echoes when one is faced with inhumanly perilous situations. Yet, the resistance to going through its horrors again prevails. Great film anyway.

I first saw this film way back in the end of 70s. Twice or thrice after that. Even with quite a knowledge and acquaintance with the Orient I was much impressed with the film. Not only or as much with the play of such renown actors as Omar Shariff and Jack Palance who I had been knowing for quite some time but with vividness and truthfulness in picturing Afghanistan of the middle of the last century. From this point of view "The Horsemen" is equal or even surpasses such beautiful cine productions as "City of Joy" or "Passage to India". Highly recommend this film. It's never too late. Specially for those who lack the knowledge of Orient generally and of Afghanistan per se, its beauty, uniqueness and plight.
