I have always been a follower of Merlin since its first season in 2008. I watched how Merlin grew up from a boy, his clumsiness, who abused his magic for the household chores, losing control and learning to regain his control of magic. The initial hostilities between Arthur and Merlin, how Merlin had been looked down upon by Arthur, until Arthur began his trust for Merlin and allowed Merlin to stand by his side in battles till the realisation that Merlin had been using his magic to aid him all along and the final ‘thank you’ for everything you have done for me right before his death. Though I have been following this series from 2008 to 2012, I couldn’t bear to bring myself to watch Arthur died there and then. I had read reviews beforehand and knew that the storyline that I have been following diligently for the past six years will end on a sad note, so I stopped watching a few episodes before the finale. I also find some of the plots repeated which is common in other western shows that I have seen. I only managed to gain the courage to rewatch the last few episodes a few days ago, ten years after its first premier. It felt as if I have just stopped watching yesterday. My feelings returned right away. I’m going to rewatch the entire series from season 1 episode 1 again for a recap. I did some googling and saw that the cast are all healthy and striving good. Hence a wild thought run across my mind and I’m wondering how it would have been if King Arthur is revived in modern day England and discovered that Merlin, his most loyal servant and warlord, has been quietly waiting for his return. How Arthur would have struggled to live in today’s England, the advancement and technologies, instead of the olden days Camelot, his own expectations of himself after decades of vanishing, how he sees Merlin, how the two best of friends struggle to find their own identities in modern day England only to realise that the old Camelot has long gone and Queen Guinevere has now turned into Queen Elizabeth II who just celebrated her jubilee. Other cast may join in the fun as the reincarnations or descendants of their previous roles. It would have been very interesting to see the show in a whole new concept and perspective. Hopefully someone will pick up this series again and have a proper ending. Thank you.
