This extraordinary, well written account of the first accent of a peak over 8,000 meters is riveting and extremely moving. It makes you appreciate the sacrifices made to climb these incredible peaks with what seems now to be very poor equipment and gear compared to modern developments. I was spell bound through out and teary eyed sad when the adventure was over. Maurice Herzog is a true hero - and paid dearly with frost bitten fingers and toes that had to be amputated en route. I heartily recommend this book to any lover of the mountains and to anyone who has seen for themselves the beauty of Annapurna in the mighty HImalayas!
