Well having read the fulsomely praising reviews from critics far more qualified to critique than I my comments may strike a somewhat discordant note. I felt the film was too long and I popped out for a break. Yes Elton’s wonderful songs were paid due homage yet on times the film lacked so much nuance - even in scenes of emotional intimacy - I felt I was watching a superior example of a school musical. Sorry Elton but it was more than a tad self indulgent and cliched. The scene where the rehabilitated adult Elton hugs his inner child was for me embarrassingly awful. Back to therapy Elton I’d say where the possibility of other people’s ‘truth’ may surprise you.
