Overall, it seems like there was directive differences that couldn't be settled between giving nods to the original or going in a new direction entirely as Disney has been doing with recent remakes. There was an apparent lack of budget for backup singers and voices as there are almost no lines sung or spoken by non-main characters which makes the movie feel a bit empty. The cgi was absolutely horrendous and ariels hair was an unmoving photoshop in most underwater scenes, and the rock where Ariel makes he famous pose also functioned as a lazy Susan to spin her into position. While the casting was overall done well, the one that was not was King Triton. The actor playing him portrayed absolutely no depth or range of emotion and should have been recast entirely.
