If you told me a year ago that Dreamworks would make a movie about a side character from Shrek and it would be one of the best American animated movie in the last 5-6 years I would say you were crazy. Puss in Boots the Last: Wish was a beautiful movie, on top of having great and likable characters(with glaring flaws). The jokes are funny and land most of the time. What stands out to me more is the story and deeper themes of the movie. The main villains are all good. Jack Horner was hilarious a weaker villain without complex motives but he didn't really need it. The three Bears was probably the weaker part of the film. I wish they spent like 10-20 more minutes with them. The wolf or Death was one of the strongest villains in any animated movie. The fear he instilled in Puss and the audience in the theater was awesome. How the final fight rapped up was mastery in writing and it looked amazing. The movie is a retrospective on death and mortality. which is a super mature theme that shows like Velma, and movies like Turning Red couldn't even come close to tackling. But it tackles with such writing prowess that it's baffling. The lesson of the movie "Live a good life and do not throw it away carelessly, " is a great message that everyone can learn from. With the messages of most movies being a far cry from good and moral messages Puss and Boots did a fantastic job. Overall the movie was great. I went into it thinking it was going to be a nothing burger with pretty visuals and a lackluster story and themes. I was wrong. I am glad I am wrong. At the end of the day, this movie is a rebuttal of the status quo for animation, my hope is more animation studios tell better and more meaningful stories like this one.
