I'll start by saying I'm only halfway through the first season, but holy nuts on a stick is there SO MUCH melodrama... All of the characters have umpteen million reasons to be sad, and those that don't get little to no limelight, or they're about as interesting as cardboard.
I was kind of excited to have such big historical events and figures come into play, but I feel like they're being squandered. I know Richter is meant to be young and inexperienced, but he vacillates wildly between calm, cool, and prickish (Trevor-esque), and a complete and utter weenie. Orlox was supposed to be a predecessor and in some ways an equal to Dracula, but he seems to fall so short so far. Sure he's a badass in his own right, but he gets hooked up with some random dude who is basically the top guard to a priest, who is, again, about as interesting as cardboard.
The voice acting also seems... amateurish? I hate to put down the talent, but there is a certain gravitas that feels like it is missing with most characters. Their emotions don't seem to match their voices. And the accents this time around feel like they're all over the place. The best voice actors are the villains by a mile. This isn't bad or anything, but it makes it so hard to dislike them compared to the protagonists (who do have some good ones, but they don't get top billing...).
In short, I'm just disappointed with the overall quality and story. I know it was probably hard to follow-up the first series, but damn this really missed the mark for me. I'm going to try to tough it out through the first season. I doubt I'll make it much further, but I hate leaving things like this unfinished.
