My one star goes to the cinematography and pacing. The story progression and ending get zero stars from me. In 'story' the concept of returning to normal or equilibrium is the goal. Here, the equilibrium on the island had been 'humans stay on one side of the fence and elves stay on the other.'
The visiting family disobeyed the rules and destroyed the equilibrium. The villagers didn't destroy the balance, the visitors did.
If the family humbly recognized their mistake and, through an exciting and scary set of scenarios, fixed what they had done, that would have been a good story. But no... When Jose asks the villager if she's the fault mom aggressively denies this over and over. Villagers die because of what the family did, but no one in the family shows any remorse until the very end when Jose alone tells the villager she's sorry for his friend's death.
If one family member died, say Mom, that would have helped. If the family had come to realization in the film that they were to blame, that would have helped. But none of them did. They got away with disobeying rules and being rude to locals.
What concerns me the most is the mental health of the writer and director of this movie. Do they think this outcome is moral? "It's okay to not follow the rules in someone else's home as long as you get what you want?" There's something very self absorbed and rotten in someone who thinks this way. And I'm an American saying this!
I loved the review: Curiosity killed the cat, why didn't it kill Josephine?
I so agree - or Jose could have at least lost an arm and her mother die. Her mother has got to go.
