This movie was fantastic! It was poignant and deliberately captivated my attention yet was knowledgeable and informative at the same time. I am going to hype (“recommend”) this movie to my friends and family. I will purchase the book it is based on as well, “Caste” by Isabel Wilkerson
Ava DuVernay captured the essence of the current events and the feelings behind them, to humanize the victims of caste systems. The lead actress Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor was magnificent in movie and should be nominated for an Academy Award for brilliant portrayal of a conflicted author/ journalist, powerfully struggling to weave the issues of past and present. All of this, in an effort to provide an explanation of the constructs of the “pillars”, that society across the world has created to subjugate a particular population to subhuman conditions and policies.
Supporting Actress, Niecy Nash, was stellar in her role as cousin helping to “make it plain” the intricate nuances of humanity while serving as a guide Aujanue Ellis’s-Taylor’s role. She, too, deserves an Oscar.
Overall, this movie is a masterpiece, a relevant artifact and dare I say it, a roadmap to healing the worldly issue of caste systems and its impact society. Bravo Ava DuVernay and cast! You will forever live in my mind snd heart as I am sure you will live in others too.
