Very well done. Sly really is a genuis who was ahead of his time. I don’t Putin much into the narrative of the burned out junkie (not that this film says this) but that has dogged Sly
Sly had a solid 7 years at the absolute peak not only in terms of chart/commercial success, but in terms of doing something uniquely his own and creative that shaped what followed. If you look at all the true greats, their really is a 5 year window where they were great
If I had one complaint about the film (it’s minor) but it leans on a narrative that as a black man, this extra pressure played a significant role in Sly’s slide. Maybe but somehow I don’t think Sly would agree.
I celebrate Sly’s unique life and gifts, all of it. I don’t think any explanation or excuse needs to be made for what happened to Sly. He’s amazing
