So many people saying “if you give this 1 star you didn’t understand the message”. This is simply not true. I could also say “if you gave this 5 stars it’s just because you’re a Jordan peele fan and don’t want to admit this is a horrible movie”. I understand what he was trying to say about society’s obsession with taming wild animals and the priority to capitalism over self preservation. I noticed the way the monkey was being exploited for money, how they didn’t care about the horse during the commercial, the people gawking at the alien during the fair instead of running, the paparazzi giving his life by trying to find his camera. I get it, capitalism is bad and will be the death of society. I even admit I might of missed out some things but the sad part is I have no interest in discussing with friends because the movie is garbage.
Get out is an actual masterpiece and that movie along with hereditary are my favorite horror movies. However just because Jordan peele made my favorite movie does not mean I will pretend all his work is good. Just because his movie has a message doesn’t mean it is a good movie. I am obsessed with Get Out because it has a message but even if you didn’t notice the message, it is an incredible and terrifying movie.
Not only is Nope not good, I will go as far as to say it is the worst horror I’ve ever seen in my life. Who cares if it had a message if it was just plain boring. My friend fell asleep and I wanted to leave half way through from boredom. The characters were so soulless that I did not care what happened to them. I feel like Jordan peele walked up to a white board, wrote a bunch of bullet points to brainstorm… and that is the movie. This movie is bullet points floating around a white board with no connection, no impact, no SOUL. The movie had no soul, no rhythm, no climax. It wasn’t alive, it didn’t suck me into its world because it has none. It just dragged on and on. 90% of the scenes added nothing to the storyline. The way the dad died in the beginning felt so random, the monkey felt random, the girl with the deformed face from the monkey attack felt random, same with so much else like the little kids in alien masks, the paparazzi. Nothing flowed. I like when a movie makes me feel something. Whether that is fear, anxiety, disgust, confusion. The only thing this made me feel was boredom and disappointment. I feel like this movie should have been a 20 minute short film. Even then I’m not sure if there’s enough content for that. I’m sad to give this a 1 star review but it deserves it. Jordan Peele gave us nothing. I’m sure someone had to try and tell him this was a bad movie but obviously he didn’t listen. Hopefully next time he will.
