After hearing about this show on TikTok, I started watching "Young Royals" with a pretty low bar. The overall plot sounded cliche, and I thought it was just getting hype because of the LGBTQ representation.
But after finishing this six episode series, I am already dying for a second season. The chemistry between Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Rydling) and his love interest, Simon (Omar Rudberg), is raw and beautiful. Knowing that a lot of their scenes were improvised also makes their characters' emotions more believable.
The side characters (like August, Felice, and Sara) deal with their own conflicts, which helps flesh out the episodes and makes even the "villain" seem more human.
The directors and screenwriters made bold choices with the plot and the way the story was told. But, they also paid attention to little details (lots of forshadowing, intricate lighting, etc.) that did not go unnoticed.
"Young Royals" is a masterpiece that portrays teen life beautifully and illustrates the struggles of LGBTQ youth beyond coming out. I cannot recommend this series enough. Looking forward to season 2!
