If you liked Star Wars: Rogue One, you'll probably like this movie
Honestly it is a great movie. One of the best I've seen in a long time. The special effects were top notch, which was a breath of fresh air from Marvel, Star Wars, and the rest of Hollywood's lackluster CGI nowadays.
The writing was fine, it wasn't anything breathtaking. Just straightforward dialogue that you could tune out for the most part, which would be a bad thing for most movies, but the visuals in this film will make you not even care about what the characters are saying. The directing and acting could tell the story on its own for the most part.
The message was the usual "treat everyone equal" narrative that's been told thousands of times before. The plot did make me ponder what signifies sentience and whether or not something manmade could obtain sentience, which is a fun thought to contemplate.
The pacing felt odd, but that's because the director and editors used A LOT of B-roll footage. It irked me at first because it was kind of thrown in there at random moments and it was a little hard to tell if I was watching a flashback or if it was a jump-cut to another act, etc. If you're keeping up with the plot it should be easy to differentiate but I was watching it right before bed and a little tired so it was difficult.
I did appreciate the B-roll footage though. Gareth Edwards created an awesome world and it'd be a shame if we only got to see the parts of it that was important to the main plot. It also humanized the AI characters even further, watching them partake in usual human activities as if it's just a part of their day. Makes you empathetic towards them, which I guess was the point of that.
The characters weren't extravagant or very memorable, my favorite character was that one robot guy that was fighting for the resistance. No I don't remember his name, or pretty much any of the character's names for that matter, but he was a cool character so I like him. I guess if you like movies where the main characters aren't so out there, this is definitely the film for you.
But yeah, solid film. Probably don't watch it right before bed since it takes a little bit of brain power to keep up at times. Still, great movie and I would definitely recommend watching it.
