This book was so heavy I almost didn’t finish it. I knew that slaves weren’t completely free after the Civil War, but I had no idea of the horrors they went through. I told myself that if things didn’t get better by the time I’d finished 25% of the book that I’d abandon it, but by that time I couldn’t put it down.
It was difficult to understand, and yet not. I don’t usually read “Important” books, opting instead for something light-hearted, but I am glad I finished this one.
At times it’s hard to tell if the characters are imagining things or if they’re really happening, and in truth I don’t think the author meant for us to understand. There is a ghost and unimaginable horrors, but I feel as though the person I was before I read Beloved is naive compared to the person I am after having read the book.
I highly recommend reading Beloved.
