I first saw Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show when I was about 12 years old. The first record I ever bought was "Jailhouse Rock". The first date I ever had with a girl was to the movie "Blue Hawaii". I was in the Air Force stationed at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas from 1969 - 1971, so I saw him live at the International Hotel more times than I can count.
It goes without saying, it was a pretty safe bet I was going to love this movie ... and I did. I can't say enough about Austin Butler's performance. It was as if Elvis had been reincarnated.
The audience in the theatre where I saw the movie had a lot of people my age (75), but there were more younger people than I expected and, from their reactions, I believe most of them really enjoyed the movie even though it was quite long.
Elvis was truly one of a kind. He has been gone now for almost half a century and people still come from all over the world to visit Graceland. In 50 years, most people won't even remember the names of the singers topping the charts today, much less make a pilgrimage to their homes.
