The Assistant is a very good, very powerful film. It’s subtle and boring and interesting and terrifying; a bit like life. It made an impact on me and that’s more than I can say about most films. If you want realism, here it is. There are no car chases, no gunfights, no dramatic courtroom scenes. And yet, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
What you do get from The Assistant is a sobering dose of real life. If I had to choose an alternate title for this film it might be “Silent Scream” or “Quiet Desperation “. The depiction of the thousand subtle ways in which the strong prey upon the weak in everyday interactions will hit a bit too close to home for most viewers.
