Louise Penney’s stories have been kidnapped by the residential school saga all while largely disregarding the facts raised through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This inserted story has robbed the stories of their charm. The villagers are mere extras not larger than life persons. Garmache, in the books, stands out because of the conflict with his superiors, dealing with the dark side of human nature and being away from his wife. This is almost totally bypassed in the series. The books are interesting and readable. This series is pedestrian.
