Not a Batman spin-off; in the true sense, but a thought provoking social commentary on attitudes to mental health and social injustice. Fantastic portrayal of one man's decent in to madness by Phoenix. Also a poignant question raised on society's attitude to human frailty and those who are socially deprived/isolated being used as entertainment for the masses. Jeremy Kyle and Jerry Springer spring to mind! A must watch. Last time I walked out at the end of a movie and felt like this was Schindler's List! Oscar worthy performance from Phoenix and I wonder if Di Nero was cast as a nod to the passed in his similar role in Taxi Driver.
