It was one of the first animes I've watched back in 2012. Sure, I've watched Naruto, Sailor Moon, and other kinds of anime, but Madoka Magica is very distinct from them. It takes the concept of magical girls, which are usually cutesy, adorable, kawaii, whatever you'd like to call -- then fuses in some psychological horror that completely shifted the tone from "magical girls annihilating witches and protecting their city!" to "magical girls who exchanged their life, eternally fighting witches, until they themselves transform into one".
To me, that's what made this anime stand out. It looks innocently cute, but as the plot thickens, you realize that it's dark, horrifying, and intense.
I would definitely recommend this anime. It's a new experience.
