Honestly. I do not know where to start. I started watching this show soon after Domina was released which I found to be quite excellent. Most of those who watched Domina raved about this show and so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I came in with high expectations , but I found myself extremely disappointed. The show was not too bad, but the acting was subpar and the sea scenes and nudity seemed a bit excessive and unnecessary. I get what the producers were trying to do, but it did not seem to come through. The portrayals of Julius Ceasar, Pompey, Antony, and the Octavian were well done, as far as, actors.  The relationship between Servilla and Octavia seemed forced. The two Roman soilders which the show seemed more focused on came up short. I felt that their relationship felt short and did not make any sense. The more brutish of the two lacked in many ways, and I found myself annoyed with both of them. Neither of them seemed likeable. I found myself trying not to fast forward past their scenes. I felt that they might have been trying a bit too hard. Another thing that I found to be most deplorable would have to be the lack of diversity. Now, I am not a historian nor an expert in history. But from what research I have done, Rome came across as a diverse land, which meant that you would have seen Greeks, Africans, Spaniards, and other ethnicities in the streets of Rome. There was a form of diversity that this show lacked. But what angered me the most would be the ludicrous depiction of Cleopatra. As I said before, I am no historian but I do believe that she might have been mixed, after all, her half-sister has been found to be mixed. Not only that, but the wigs that she was decorated with I thought were atrocious. I would have rathered they used to real hair. They could have at least used a braided lace front on her with some beads. The white wig was the worst. It was just horrible and filthy to look at. And of course, most of the egyptian representation had to appear as slaves. Cleopatra is one of the most fascinating women in egyptian history and I felt that her tale was botched. That was the worst part of the show, by far. I had heard that the show was epic and brilliant, but when I watched it, I did not think that it was epic. There were not many fight scenes. The scenes that did exist were a bit drab and not as exciting. For production costs to be so high, it certainly did not seem like it with those atrocious wigs they put on Cleopatra. I didn't like it. In season two, I felt that everything got rushed and shoved into it and I barely made it through season one without reading a book for some form of entertainment. I'm not sure I would recommend this to any friends or colleagues of mine who are interested in good shows about Rome. Emphasis on the word good. As I have stated before, the saving grace of this shown would be Octavian and his family. Other than that, it was a complete snooze fest. The inaccuracies in this show is laughable. Domina seemed more accurate and the historical inaccuracies blended into the show and didn't seem to ludicrous. But in Rome, there were too many historical inaccuracies that were all smashed together. They should not have destroyed the characters of Gaius Octavian, Octavia the Minor, Cleopatra, ext. just to make the show more interesting. It's like they tried to do like Gladiator, but while Gladiator was a masterpiece, this show was a complete failure and should have been canceled.
