An interesting watch to hopefully help people remember and understand what the men and women of the time underwent. The USAAF, and all Allied forces, were a brave group of people working together whilst facing terrible odds at times and deserve full recognition for their courage and selflessness.
But that's about where the praise ends. It's clear that Millar has the stereotypical standard view of the USA winning the war and how the British were feeble murderers. He calls the night bombing "slaughter bombing" and talks of the precision of USAAF approach. It's funny, then, how the group releases their bombs on the command of the lead bomber - if the force was large, they would take up many square miles of airspace, and their bombs would fall on an equally large area of land. The British may well have been public on their area bombing, but that doesn't mean the American system was much better. By the end of the war, Bomber Command (certainly not just British, but equally brave Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders etc etc) were just as accurate at night as the USAAF were by day. Their aircraft simply carried more bombs and did more damage. Similar to the B29s in the Pacific which burnt miles of wood-built Japanese cities. Double standards, much?
I'd love to know where the "thanks Yanks" sign was in the Netherlands as the USAAF dropped a little over half the total of Bomber Command and every photo and memory you read from the time was of Bomber Command aircraft, not American... That's not to say they weren't there - most other countries in the world acknowledge the joint operation - but they weren't the only ones. Nor were they the main player.
So instead of doing an honest, real portrayal of the second world war, without virtue signalling and populist narrative, we have a standard misleading series which continues to undermine the bravery, comeraderie and teamwork of the time. It's a real shame as I hoped it would be something like Band of Brothers and simply focus on the amazing people, without trying to belittle everyone else's contribution. A great opportunity wasted.
Not a patch on Memphis Belle or 12 O'Clock high....
