Growing up in the 50’s our family watched “The wizard of Oz” every time it was shown on television. I was dubious at first to watch this movie although Renee Zellwegger is a great actor so I trusted her on this one. She does not imitate Judy Garland as much as channels her angst, joys and sorrows for a heartbreaking and sincere look at how “childhood stardom” can destroy the person behind the actor. “I am Judy Garland only for an hour a night”...when Zellweger speaks the line as “Judy” the cost of her stardom, her forced addictions, went right to my heart. In the end when the audience sang to her I cried. This performance is why there is an academy award...not only does Renee Zellwegger deserve the Oscar, Judy Garland deserves Oscar for being that vulnerable and talented actress who died at 47, an addict of fame.
