I believe this was a very good movie. There was so much detail in the modern design of the Aether spaceship. The visuals on K-23, the habitable Jupiter moon was well done. Even little things like the Spectral Analysis of K-23 was a very nice touch. I also liked the idea of leaving beacons on space flight paths. I just wonder, if the extinction event affected just earth. Why were the other spaceships & space stations inactive? When Augustine queried the computer for information on active missions, I could see at least 30 possible missions. Why were they inactive. Even Aether failed to communicate with anyone & was only able to successfully reach Augustine on the Lake Hazen weather station antener. (Note that I am talking about other missions & not stations on earth. Earths silence could be as a result of the evacuation or the corrupted atmosphere interrupting communication signals).
I enjoyed some creative mixtures & shoots. Like when the sound of the sea waves blended with the sound of the blizzard in the next scene at the observatory. Also liked the cameras focus on the Aether fading out to reveal Augustine riding the snow mobile.
The movie felt kind of melancholic but I don't care. I think they blended. From Augustine having a terminal illness; Augustine focusing on his work and ignoring his pregnant girlfriend & not communicating with his child; the extinction event; the flight crew that took a shuttle to embark on an impossible entry into earth; the lone couple returning to K-23 and so on.
The dialogues were not rushed and very little music themes. A lot of intentional empty spaces in the movie.
This was a very good movie. If you are looking for space spectacles, this probably is not for you. The movie has a good story & is a fantastic representation of what could be.
