As a twenty-eight y.o. Black woman who grew-up with 'the Little Mermaid' & has loved it since I was born in '94, I can assure you seeing this film Friday was absolutely everything! Maybe that's why it's the best critically acclaimed live-action Disney film since 'Beauty & the Beast' & both the Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb scores are stellar' (while white men and women hate').
Every plot-line was respected, the effects are stellar, and everyone's performance is spot-on, Halle's most of all. Everyone looked like their character and some of the new music was even better than the original (especially Eric's solo - which was difficult for me to admit, adoring the original for so long, I thought nothing could enhance it).
As a Black woman, it's also very telling that so many white people are making dismissive and unfortunate videos in opposition to the film simply because Ariel is being played by a Black woman.
The most satisfying thing was to see the expected scenes between Ariel and Ursula's younger (human) form as it is so easily juxtaposed to white culture being so upset that there's a Black mermaid now who goes by the same name. It honestly was uncanny to see the jealousy in that white woman's face - Ursula's human form who was trying to steal the prince - understanding it's the same emotion felt by these white supremacists.
