Well woven story and interesting characters. I really don't like the white savior trope to begin with and the lead character was an incredibly weak and childish protagonist. Her narration was thorough, but self serving. The other narrator who was of colour had little page space and likely had a more interesting story that was not fleshed out. That all said, it really gets into the era, the mentality of slaves as property, how inhumane medical and personal practices were, and the fragility of human life. Solid read, but definitely could use some more depth.
