I vote with my stars and the film is so refreshing and earnest. Because of how large the set pieces are and how much larger-than-life all the characters around him are, Jim Carrey can ham it up all day and not be chewing the scenery. Great characterization of Knuckles by Edris Alba, and Colleen O'Shaughnessey was allowed to reprise her role, which was such a clutch decision to not cut her out. (Hard glares at Nintendo)
You get the feeling like the people working on the movie really care about the franchise because it hits the correct notes, the characters feel correct, and as a fan, you are rewarded with musical cues and --this is the most surprising part-- an in-movie explanation that ties back to the games as to why Sonic's rings are important (as a means of escaping) and why having zero at any time was a big problem. And it doesn't feel forced or contrived at all.
Pantera's "Walk" is referenced musically.
It has no business being as good as it is, but I'm very, very happy that it is.
